The Pomona Community Library is driving innovation with its new Music Garden and outdoor patio, made possible by a NEKLS Innovation Grant and private donations. Faced with limited space, the Library creatively incorporated seating, a sensory garden, a Little Free Library, and various outdoor activities to cater to all ages.

In collaboration with the local Extension Office, the Library installed raised beds for the sensory garden. A community Work Day allowed children and their parents to plant flowers and learn about pollination from volunteers and Extension staff. This outdoor area now serves as vital additional space for learning and engagement.

Kayla Hendershot, the Library Director, expressed her excitement over the community’s overwhelming support, noting the positive feedback they have received. She said, “It is so fun to see the kids excited to spend time outside at the library!” The project exemplifies how small libraries can leverage innovative ideas and community partnerships to enhance their facilities with outdoor spaces that promote fun and learning.
