The 6 by 6 Family Reading Workshop, held at the Bonner Springs City Library on 3/24, was a HUGE success! We started at 5:30pm with 45 in attendance, including families from the USD204 Parents as Teachers group, as well as a good number of our own patrons. “6 by 6” refers to 6 skills that parents can teach their children by age 6, which will help make them better readers. Our presenter, Anna Foote, helped to develop this program while she worked in the Johnson County Library system, and later, while working at the State Library of Kansas, she helped to implement these skills throughout Kansas libraries. Anna presented the 6 by 6 skills to the parents while we enjoyed pizza and cookies (provided by the Friends of the Library), then she did a story time for the children and demonstrated the 6 skills as she read. We made our collection of 6 by 6 literacy kits available in the meeting room for patron checkout, and many of them were checked out that night.
