Continuing Education

NEKLS Continuing Education opportunities are designed to serve all of our member libraries’ needs, whether school, academic, public or special. Our consultants work closely as a team to develop activities and workshops that meet broad, and more specific, continuing education requirements of members.

During each each calendar year, NEKLS maintains a series of workshops, webinars, and events, with the focus changing from year to year depending on library trends, changing professional development emphases, and member interests. We also facilitate meetings of Communities of Practice, such as academic libraries and adult programming.

Annual Continuing Education Events

Summer Reading Workshop

Held each year in February or March, usually at TSCPL, full day event. Kansas contracts with a workshop presenter who provides hands on examples of programming ideas, crafts, books, and other resources. Kansas is part of the national CSLP (Collaborative Summer Library Program), following a set theme and manual every year. NEKLS and the State Library work together to provide support and funding for manuals, materials and the workshop.

Trustee Workshops

Each summer, NEKLS offers a workshop or series of area workshops on selected topics geared toward library board members. Topics range from board duties and budgets to personnel issues and community partnerships. In past years, NEKLS has offered the workshop in 4-5 locations. This year a single event was held for a larger group; keynote was recorded and archived.

School Librarians Workshop

In July each year NEKLS provides a full day continuing education event for school librarians. Previous topics include public-school collaboration, Buffy Hamilton on filtering, redefining the role of school librarians, using non-fiction materials in common core, and one-to-one classrooms (integrating devices). Breakout sessions and networking time are included.

Directors Institutes

Begun in 2013, these full day learning opportunities are limited to NEKLS public library directors. They include a mixture of keynote presentation or facilitated workshop, group discussions, and networking. Held at various locations throughout the system. Topics range from leadership to community partnerships and community conversations. They are focused on library leadership and management best practices.

NEKLS Annual Meeting

Usually held the third Thursday in August, this full day event is held at a larger conference space to accommodate all NEKLS system members. A system business meeting, election of board, approval of the annual budget, and system director’s report provides the formal assembly. The day historically also includes the Library Volunteer of the Year Award, luncheon, and a program on a variety of library-focused topics.
